May 10th, 2007 — events, money challenges

To celebrate its second year anniversary, Five Cent Nickel, a personal finance blog, is giving away prices. One of the two ways to enter the contest is to write a review of the site. Well, here goes my shot and hoping to win the Ipod Nano.
The Good Stuff
The things that first caught my attention at the FCN site are the free stuffs - from credit card sign up bonuses to free credit card miles. Let’s take this contest for example, you only need to leave a comment at the end of the anniversary contest post, and promise to tell at least one friend about it and voila! You now have 1 entry to enter the contest, and a chance to win the cool prizes they have like ipod nano, usb microdrive and more. Cool huh! These free stuffs make the site very appealing to readers and make them come back for more, plus advertising through word of mouth.
Other than the free stuff, the major thing I like about FCN is that is very good in giving financial advice in an easy to understand way. If you have not checked the site before, it’s never too late, and I assure you that it is worth your time. The site is full of information about everything that deals with money and finances.
What to perk up
Just because the site is dedicated on the topic of money and finances, it doesn’t mean the site should also appear so formal and wordy. In my opinion, the site needs a little more color and some graphics, to make it appear lively and attractive to the eyes. But don’t get me wrong, just because the site is too text-y does not mean that the site is boring, I am just judging on the appearance of the site.

April 8th, 2007 — events, saving money
Saving money on cars does not mean you have to always be on the lookout for that used car or always be taking note of ways to improve your car’s gas mileage. For those who would rather not buy a car, it is important to know your options in saving money for car rentals.
Do you want a lower cost for car rentals? In the Philadelphia area this is possible. Not only can you save on the cost of the rental, but also help the environment lessen the pollution caused by car fuel and saving on car maintenance cost. Continue reading →

In an effort to rise from the zero-percent national savings rate, which is according Connie Costner, Michigan State University Extension’s Family and Consumer Sciences Program Leader, a 10-day financial education week was announced. Dubbed as Money Smart Week, which will run from April 20-29, this annual event is from Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago-Detroit Branch.
Educational display tables will be set up at local financial institutions to emphasize the value of saving.
The exhibit will emphasize the concept that saving money, even in small amounts, is an achievable choice that can reap great benefits over time. Strategies on ways to save, such as practicing the “Pay Yourself First” philosophy, will be featured within the display and accompanying brochures that will be provided for anyone interested.

March 23rd, 2007 — events
If you have been looking for some excuse to save money on your energy bill, you might want to join Shut Down Day, which is on March 24.
It’s actually a movement to test whether people can actually live one whole day without turning their computers on.
It is obvious that people would find life extremely difficult without computers, maybe even impossible. If they disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope?
Be a part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the internet. The idea behind the experiment is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day, and what will happen if we all participate!
Shutdown your computer on this day and find out! Can you survive for 24 hours without your computer?- Shut Down Day
You can go straight to Shut Down Day’s site and take the poll on whether you are willing to go without a computer on March 24.
Me? I’d like to. But I’m starting on some new projects on that day, which is according to the site is only about 5 hours away as of this blogging. So, yeah. I can’t join you folks. I wish it can be reset to March 25. That’ll be a Sunday!
